(BOSTON) – On Tuesday, September 17th, Representative Joan Meschino (D-Hull) attended the Massachusetts 250 kickoff event along with other South Shore leaders. The 250th anniversary of our nation is in July 2026, and Massachusetts leaders have taken this as an opportunity to invest in historical landmarks and development across the state. Tuesday’s event kicked off the celebration; Governor Maura Healey was spotted on horseback along Beacon Street and historical reenactors dotted the State House steps.

“Across the state, leaders are using this anniversary to promote the historical richness of our communities,” said Representative Meschino (D-Hull). “I am grateful that the administration has made grant funds available to our community organizations to boost local economic development and show off all that our state has to offer.”

South Shore historical organizations are gearing up for the MA250 events in the coming years. Hingham Historical Society received $30,000 from the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism (MOTT) MA250 Grant Program to aid the creation of their “Revisiting the American Revolution: Hingham 1775-1777” exhibit. Hingham Historical Society and the Hull Lifesaving Museum received MOTT Destination Development Capital (DDC) Grants of $200,000 and $125,000 respectively. Cohasset Historical Society just opened their Maritime Museum which details the area’s rich maritime history that date s back to before the founding of the state.

It’s a rare sight to see any official signage on the outside of the State House, but on Tuesday a large “MA250” banner unfurled from beneath the State House dome. South Shore historical organizations are preparing for what promises to be an exciting time across the state. You can learn more about MA250 here.
