(HULL) – Sporting everything from pirate outfits to bunny costumes, hard hats to bathing suits, hundreds of people gathered at the annual Nantasket Polar Plunge to support funding for the Special Olympics. Congregating at the Mary Jeannette Murray Bath House at Nantasket Beach in Hull, plungers charged into the oncoming winter waves on the morning of Saturday, February 22nd.

Representative Joan Meschino (D-Hull) attended the event and offered brief remarks: “It was great to see local families at this long-standing event and to welcome folks from far and wide. The polar plunge, which helps raise support and awareness for those with intellectual disabilities, is a time that we come together as a town and make it clear what we stand for.”

As of February 25th, the event was nearing its $220,000 fundraising goal. Many plungers were part of organizational teams led by team captains who helped facilitate the day’s events and fundraising efforts. Additionally, the U.S. Coast Guard had safety divers on hand to ensure the well-being of those joining this year’s plunge.

As organizers of the event put it: “The Polar Plunge is about more than just a good time….you are empowering over 14,000 Special Olympics athletes in Massachusetts to train and compete in the sports they love, sponsoring lifelong friendships and competitive spirits, and celebrating inclusion for individuals with intellectual disabilities on and off the playing field.”

With over 300 participants and 30 teams, this year’s event highlighted a shared commitment to supporting all that the Special Olympics stands for. Click here for more information.
